Get Involved

A large part of the work we do in the community is through our on going work groups. We currently have 3 work groups that have been doing amazing things over the past few months and we have a few others in the early stages. This is not the only work we have going on, but a dedicated work group is a great way to get involved and to see immediate impact from our work. If you are interested in any of our current work groups please let us know and we can connect you to the group leaders. If you have an idea for a work group that can impact the use of drugs and alcohol on our teens in our communities go to the Ideas to Promote Community Health section under contact us on our website and we will begin the conversation and support to get that group started. Check out our current groups below and see which one you want to join.

In Plain View (The Bedroom Project)

This interactive display of a teenager’s bedroom contains over 60 items that could signal a teen is involved in risky activities. Parents will learn how to spot these warning signs and get tips for talking with their kids about the dangers of alcohol and drug use. Would you recognize signs of youth alcohol or drug use in your home?

Remember: Teens whose parents talk to them regularly about the dangers of drugs are up to 50% less likely to try them! Come learn how to get these conversations started.

Throughout the 2017-18 school year our “In Plain View” work group has been setting up and conducting the Bedroom Project at each Parkway Middle School in the district. In the fall this event was held at Parkway Central and Parkway Southwest Middle Schools. Throughout the spring we will hold this event at Parkway Northwest, Parkway South and Parkway West Middle Schools and we would love your help and support. Check out our flyer for this event and if you are interested in help with this group please contact us and we will get you in touch with the work group leaders.

Mini Alcohol Bottles Letter Writing Campaign

Each year our community law enforcement agencies organize a prescription drug take back event that allows anyone to drop off expired or unused prescription drugs. This gets 1000’s of pounds of unused drugs out of the wrong hands. In this we need volunteers to help promote the events prior to the date, drive around on the day of the events and thank our law enforcement volunteers who are collecting the drugs and create and send thank you cards to those municipalities that participated in the event. These usually happen several times a year, in the spring and in the fall. We would love for your support before, during and after each Prescription Drug take back event and to even think of ways to collect these medication outside of the set schedule for collection. Contact us if you are interested in learning more.

Prescription Drug Take Back Events

Have you ever noticed that in the last few years when you walk into some grocery stores you see those little mini bottles of alcohol in various places around the store? Not just in the alcohol section but near the fruits and veggies, near the end of several isles, before you check out, I even saw some near some cheese once. We have a work group that is currently working on a letter writing campaign to these stores to encourage them to keep those bottles in the alcohol section. It’s very easy for a teenager to stroll by, grab several of those and walk out the door when they are in multiple places in the stores vs. if they are in a dedicated location, much easier to monitor. There are a variety of ways to support this process so let us know if you are interested. We are currently in the middle of a letter writing campaign that we will send our thoughts and willingness to engage stores and store corporate offices in a conversation about these mini alcohol bottles and we need your help. The more letters we send the bigger the message is to these stores. Help us organize, help us stuff envelopes and help us with this conversation we hope to have about why these bottles are a danger to our teens and what suggestions we can make to improve this issue in our communities.

Social Media Volunteer

We are always looking for good and interesting subjects to post on our website and social media. If you are into social media, writing blog posts or have something you would like to share with us, you might be a great social media volunteer.
